What's up!

So I am blaming Hudson for my early return to running. He advises runners to not take more than one week off, and always keep their mileage at at least 50% of their max mileage. He points out that injury is likely to happen when the body undergoes stress, like increase mileage, or speed, or change of terrain. In addition to protection from injury, Hudson also believes that maintaining such a base allows one to improve from year to year. What do I know? I listen to the expert!

OK, OK, so the truth is that I feel like my body has deconditioned enough in one week off of running. I build fitness/speed quickly, but I lose it quickly, too. Case in point. I was mildly sore after Baystate, but was severely sore after my Saturday trail run. Today I went for an easy 5 mile trail run (a flat 1 mile loop around a reservoir), and then decided to do some squats (25). Wouldn't you know it, I am so sore now, even though I took an ice bath and swam a little to stretch myself out.

Speaking of swimming. This Total Immersion Swimming plan really works. That guy Terry Laughing is a genius. This month I celebrated one year since I first put my head under the water, and since I swam one lap of crawl. I remember being so nervous when I would get to the deep end of the pool, thinking and feeling like I am going to drawn. It is hard to believe that I came so far; I am growing into a confident (albeit slow) swimmer. If you've ever wanted to swim, well, if I did it, you can do it too. And you don't necessarily need a coach for that! So, yes, I am a little proud. Now if Petru would develop any interest in swimming....He does like to run, but all organized group sports lessons (swimming, basketball, soccer) have been a fail. He did, however, love gymnastics, and he loves ballet/dancing, so maybe I should not complain.

On Wednesday I have my 3 hour bike fit/pedal stroke, cleat position, etc, etc, analysis. Yesterday I got my Kurt Kinetic and wow, what a difference from my old trainer. There is no cheating on this one, and it really feels like I am riding on the road. I've also discovered Hulu TV and lots of shows that I've never watched, so I should be all set for a while. I watched Kona 2008 the other day and had tears in my eyes. Love that stuff!

I am working on my racing schedule. I need to be smart about it and not sign up for too many races. For me, too many races = injury, mostly bc I push myself a lot in training, too. So far I am doing one HM in February and Mooseman HIM in June.

I also developed some long term goals, which I will post on the side of this blog:) Yes, very ambitious, but the mind puts limits on what we can do, and I don't want to live by these limits.

Sending healing vibes to everyone injured. So many of my fav bloggers are either injured or coming out from injury! Heal, heal, heaaaal!!!!!

I am all about listening to the expert:) You were not sore after your marathon? It means that you did you training right, right?
Love your goals (although HM is little mild. Go for sub-1:23:))!!! I really do not want to sound mean, but I really get inspired by how good/fast/determined you are even in your age. And you are still setting ambitious goals. Ok, ok, I know you are not that old. But come'n, when you were 25 didn't you think that people over 35 were old?:)
When I think about people like you I know that I do not need to hurry. I can do marathons/IM and whatever even in 10-15 years.

Tami, this guy charges $250 for the 3 hours. He is a PT, an ironman (including Kona), and has done bike fitting for several pros. He's got great reviews and worked with my bike shop for a while.

Love your goals!! I bet you can get them...Good luck in your analysis! Can't wait to hear how it went.

You've always owned your goals and met them, after a lot of hard work. I glanced at your new goals and I can definitely see you pulling them off. Your strength both mentally and physically and your motivation to not place any limits on yourself, set you a part and get you to where you want to be. Very motivating and inspirational for me! Thanks!!

I'm excited to hear how your bike fitting goes. I had a fit done last year, but am looking into the type of fit you're getting. I think I need it!

I DEF think you can hit the 5k goal, as well as the half marathon. With the right bike/fit/training you can do a sub 5 hour. From what I've seen/experienced, a sub 5 hr IM is pretty big, but you've got the serious determination to do it!

Looking forward to reading about your big goals! :)

I take a week to 10 days off normally, but by then I'm ready to get back out there.

Mmm am very interested in your total immersion stuff. Did you get it all off the internet or did you books / DVDs?

Love your goals and I totally believe in putting it out there. you won't believe unless you do that so I am impressed and inspired!

Another HIM! You are going to inspire me to swim at some point here. Actually, I'm not the worst swimmer, I just don't like it yet. I'm not a big racer either. At most I will likely ever do 2 marathons a year. I like the training and I hate taper and recovery! I LOVE that you put your goals out there. Of all people, you will be the one I wholeheartedly believe will accomplish them!!! Good luck with the bike fitting! Oh- and yes I have 39 pullovers, all different brands and colors although at least 20 of them are black!

Glad the swimming is going well! I don't like taking a whole lot of time off either - I just had to learn the hard way to take some time easy/reduced mileage instead of jumping right back to it.

i always feel so sluggish after a marathon. I miss those strenuous workouts. The taper, then the recovery, it's so annoying. i ran 13 on sunday but it was on the trails so i still feel really antsy to get in a good workout. this morning i used a cardio machine at the gym and then swam, i feel a little better but i'm definitely anxious to run fast. I'm looking forward to the 50 but what i'm really looking forward to is getting back to my NORMAL routine! hopefully by November 15th.

love the total immersion stuff. Just on Sunday -- one drill for an hour and a half with a TI coach and I feel like my stroke is soooooo much better!

oh i love the statement about the mind limiting us, that is so true!!

3 hours on the bike, still sounds like torture though

I can't wait to see all of those future goals! You are such a go getter:) I am sure that there is nothing that you can't do....seriously!

My little guy is going to start his first real swimming lessons in November. I hope it goes well and that he likes his teacher. He is pretty shy and if he doesn't like his teacher it will be a fail. I think it is great that your son has attempted all of those sports...that is awesome!

I looked into that TI swimming and since you think it works I want to try it (my swimming "coach" did not prove to be very knowledgeable about longer distance swimming techniques, so I want to check out other options). Did you use only that Freesstyle DVD or how did you do it?
Thanks.
