Base training, music concer, Halloween...oh, my!

Base training:
I managed to run 30 miles, swim 3 miles and bike 5 hours this past week. Pretty pleased with that. My legs feel great. I've done some research on strength training and running - actual scientific studies - and they got me convinced that plyometrics and a strong core are the way to go and will improve my running/biking economy/power. I have not designed a program yet, but I will. I'll add plyometrics to runs, and will develop a strength program to do at night (I do have a current program, but it needs work).

I went back to the Fells this weekend and ran the same trail again. Next week I'll probably double up - 15 miles, probably 3 hours and 30 min, perfect endurance work for base training. I plan on going there until the snow hits the ground! I've been getting on my bike - still the old one - a lot, for 45-60 min/session. Next week I'll start building a 2h ride in, either outdoors or on the trainer. Next Sunday I'll also start Masters, which has me a bit nervous.

Music Concert:
On Friday evening we took Petru to his first Passim concert. For those of you not from MA, this is a tiny cafe where mostly folk bands/singers play, some quite famous, but mostly newer bands. We discovered David Wax Museum last Spring, and have been playing their music a lot. Petru loves them (when he was born Chris and I made a pact to avoid kid music and get him on board with music that we like. It worked! He's got great taste:), and has been having concerts in the summer "playing" their music. Here he is, this summer, age 4:

We promised that we would take him to one of their concerts this year, and it so happen that they played at Passim for their last MA concert of the year. The opening band started at 7:00, and they came on around 8pm. We were a bit worried bc Petru hates loud noises, but he did amazingly well, got to talk to the band, they played his favorite song and interacted with him a lot. It was a blast. Can't wait to do it again!!!

Halloween:

Chris and I have a tradition. We dress up every year. Last year we were Sunny and Cher. This year I wanted us to be The Situation and Snookie, but apparently these are super popular characters, so I changed my mind. Chris and I went on our own. He decided to be Superfrog (yes, it's made up). I decided to use my Splish suit and was Wonder Woman (I did wear a cape over the suit, though I think I still made half of the neighbourhood uncomfortable). Petru, of course, did not want to dress up (he refuses every year!), but I managed to put some tights on him and a longer shirt, so he had a little goth look.

Trying to look fierce!

Petru behind the pink butterfly...he was ALL about candy!

My Superfrog!
(inspired by the Vibrams I got him for his bday!)

Now I am off to "help" Petru eat his candy:) In my house it's all you can eat candy for Halloween!

I need to add more strength training into my routine too. I just need to sit down and figure it all out! I would love to hear what you come up with for adding plyometrics!

Wow, you had an amazing week! Go you! I don't know where you get all the energy to do everything that you do:)

Your little guy is darling and I love the fact that he shares your passion for music.

Hell yes, I would say that you look fierce!! Love the costume...way to rock it!

It looks like Petru had a blast, talking to his favorite band, as so did you. So cool.

Seems that your plan not to run for 14 days after the marathon and for which you asked us to make you feel accountable went completely out of a window with 30miles run, 5hours bike and 3miles swim:) I hope you will not crash in few weeks. Do you have any races planned soon?

Yes, I completely agree about the plyo and strength training. I'm convinced now that it is important for injury prevention as well.

Love the Halloween costumes and the pic of your son playing the drums! Your costume is perfect!

Yay superwoman! Getting your money's worth out of that suit :) So fun that you guys dress up with Petru. Thank goodness he has such good help with his candy-eating ;)

You deserve to wear that Wonder Woman costume with all that working out you do!! Amazing and your costumes are Hilarious!! I totally agree that plyometrics and a strong core are the way to go. I need to be more consistent with that this time around!

Yes-free dental is definitely a perk! My work is 18 miles from my house and they are paving a trail on the old railroad tracks that goes directly from my front door to my office. I'm thinking I'm going to need to invest in a good bike and take advantage of it-totally clueless in the bike department and only know how to pedal but I really do think I would enjoy getting into it a bit more! I know it has positive effects with the running.

P.S.-I love that you avoided the kid music with your little guy!

Hahah, Superfrog is really fun! And I love your Wonderwoman costume ... when you said you made some neighbors uncomfortable I thought maybe you were showing the bare legs, but that was a great idea and nothing for them to be uncomfortable about :).

Great job on the weight training and plyos....that makes a HUGE difference in your training. Promise!
