I am loving half ironman training. I think it was exactly what I needed after the strict marathon training. I am so much more relaxed. I don't skip workouts, but there is no pace to hit on the bike, and although I am pushing myself during the swim, I am not strict about my times. This will be my first HI, and this is an experiment to see whether I want to become serious about triathlon.
I put in lots of miles during the past week: 42 running (including a 2 hour run by feel, to keep my endurance up = ended up being faster than I expected and I loved not to be Garmin obsessed), 101 mile biking (51 outdoors, on a new route, a bit too fast which meant difficult last 15 miles), 4 miles swimming (including 1.5 miles when I shared the lane with 3 faster swimmers and swam in fear that I am going to get in their way; nothing like a little extra motivation to move outside my comfort zone; and wow, how fun! I have to find a way to do masters next year!).
I am feeling great! I am not too tired, and I am not super hungry (I keep hearing about hunger pangs with increased training, but not me). My legs feel great, too, and strong!
Summer is here, and there is lots going on. I'll probably run a free fun 2.5 mile race in Fresh Pond next weekend, then my last attempt to the sub 20 at Lowell on June 6th. I'll get to swim, ride and run on the course of the Vermont Journey Half Ironman in 3 weeks, as Chris and I will take a little getaway to Vermont (so it happens:) for our 10th year anniversary. Can you say awesome husband? He actually proposed that we go there! He'll do the swim and bike course with me, which is great because:1) I'll feel safe in the water and 2) I won't get lost on the bike! I heard the course is hilly, which concerns me a bit because I am only now learning to shift gears for uphills and downhills. But, I have plenty of time!
The day after the actual race we will all fly to Romania where I have a conference and then Chris and I will explore the Carpathians while my mom and Petru get to hang out! Can't wait!!! There will also be lots of weekends in New Castle at the beach with Chris's mom, and swims at Waldon Pond and Arlington reservoir. I have no major work deadline except the usual, so I'll get to enjoy my summer of training and my family!

Wow-you are killing the training!! I am in major slo-mo gear right now but ready to go again on May 31st. I'm really starting to like the bike-not the swim but the bike! It'll be so fun to follow you throughout this half-ironman training! Good Luck!!
Awesome training! Glad you are relaxed and enjoying it.
sounds like a good time;-)
and can i just say, i love that we have the same name (virtually), the same age children, the same anniversary # of years (10yrs), and we're both doing our first half ironman tri...
now can i just have your perseverance please!;-)
Sounds like you're doing great! Pacing lessons are important to learn on the bike... but sounds like you're learning. :) And how cool you get to go ride in Vermont and then head over to Europe. Nice.
Woohoo for summer and Europe. One of the hard things about Hawaii is Europe is sooo far away.
Awesome work! Sounds like you're having lots of fun.
i am loving the tri training too. there's a short tri in madison NH on the 11th or 12th of june, you should come up and do it!
You and me both girl. This is great!!! I love the traning so far and for once and am not worried about injury because of all the cross training. I love it!
seriously, you are going to KILL that HIM!! love that you are loving training so much! perfect timing post marathon :) sounds like you have an awesome summer ahead of you too.
You are getting into fantastic half IM shape--you'll tear it up! Your summer plans sound lovely. Jealous that you get to swim in fresh-water ponds. The pool just isn't the same!
great training. You people that do tri are nutty :-)
Sounds like you're in an awesome training span. Keep up the good work!
Sounds like fun summer stuff with lot of outdoor activities. I love that!
And wow, you are really serious about this HI thing! I am thinking about doing triathlons (honestly, I have been obsessed with triathlons since like 7th grade but never done any) in the future. First I would like to know how fast I can get for 1/2marathon and marathon.
ok... WOW. 42 miles of running PLUS an insane amount of swim and bike time?!?!? and let's not forget you are a mom too! crazy!!! how do you put more than 24 hours in your day? :)
Good Lord lady, you are a machine! Nice job on all of your half-ironman workouts:)
Have a safe trip to Romania and have a wonderful time!
Sounds like you have some amazing summer plans ahead of you. Congratulations. I'm jealous of your half-ironman training. Seriously jealous!
