One thing I will say, no Ironman for me until I retire! There is no way I could incorporate that kind of training into my life at this point!

I'm with you! I just don't know how they do it but they do and most are rocking it! You'll fit it all in, you are totally organized and motivated by your goals. It will all work!
i'm tired just looking at your day. dang. nice work.
and oh yah...i think you w/your determination/athleticism could do an IM;-)
I envy that 2:15-5:20 block where you are only responsible for yourself and training. You must be exhausted at the end of each day, though.
I am tired just READING this! Well done for fitting it in - you're doing great just trying this.
Man what a crazy day.
I will stop complaining about how busy I am after reading this
Busy day! Wow!
I am interested in your comment about not doing an Ironman until you retire :-) as I have lots of friends here who think similarly.
The situation is almost always the same. They currently do as much training as they can fit in to do whatever race they are doing now (be it running or short course tri or cycling or whatever). Inevitably, since Ironman is soooo much longer than any of these other sports, they extrapolate the training they do now out to these distances.
Helloooooooo. Who would ever do that? An elite Ironman athlete does not train as much as an elite swimmer + an elite cyclist + an elite runner. They each probably do a similar number of hours. (Or maybe the Ironman does a *few* more but not that many more and certainly not in proportion to the distance covered.)
I have completed eight Ironman tri's at way below an elite level. As an example, for my last Ironman in 2004 I trained an average of 6.5hours/week for the last 15 weeks leading into the race. I did 11.17hours (S 1.12/B 5.45/R 4.12).
For the marathon last year my 15-week average training time was 4.3 hrs/week; where I ran 3.18.
To be fair, I have always raced Ironman "underdone" and I think a suitable minimum commitment is probably closer to 10 hrs/week. In your case you'd probably spend half of this on the bike with the other half split between swimming and running.
My point is this: the hardest thing about doing an Ironman is deciding you *want* to. Everything else follows.
And whilst the amount of training will be more than what you have done as a single sport athlete, it is unlikely to be anywhere near the amount you think might be required.
Cheers, Paul :-)
- my thoughts only ... but I reckon you'd make an ace Ironman (or anything for that matter)
Seems like you already do a version of the IM everyday...
I am bowing to you in total awe and respect. I wish I were this organized.
I am sure you will do Ironman way before you retire. People like you can accomplish amazing things.
LONG days my friend! I did an IM in '99, but it was before kids and I work as a freelance writer from home, so that made it doable. How all these people with jobs and kids do it I'll never know!
Three hours a day is more than plenty for IM training. But don't rush into an IM. Fall in love with triathlon first.
And nice job with time management. I am the most efficient person in the world because I have to be to get everything done. If I wasn't so efficient and organized I can't imagine trying to train.
Busy woman, that's for sure!! You'll get the Ironman when it's time, but for now you are doing amazing!! Hang in there girl, the weekend's almost here!!! :)
Lots of time for an IM and even your HIM! You can totally do either of them on quality training, as some have said it is about quality not quantity. I have never done an IM so i cant really say but I agree with Angela, that is a LONG time to sit on your bike if you dont really *heart* riding. ( I actually think you do heart riding!)
Anyways....the short tri's and oly's IMO are hard bc there is no Zone 2-3. IT's all out! Lots to try, and if this is your every day....you deserve some massages!
wow i don't even know how you do it!! I am jsut marathon training and have no kids and it feels like a lot some days
Paul: great points, as usual! My problem is that I am the nerd who always has to do her homework 100%...Also, after you've done 18 ironman, the training is "in you", after you've done 0 ironman, you've got nothing to fall back to.
Copiaverborum: yes, I am lucky I have that time to train, but I really believe I made that time for myself; everyone can find a little time, it is just a matter of prioritizing. I don't dilly dally much these days!
Chris: everyone defines "busy" differently.
Shutupandrun: yes!
Ewa: I am not particularly organized. When I don't train, I get lazy. You get organized when you want to accomplish something bad enough.
Misszippy: yes!
Angela: no rushing into an IM, no worries:) You are my inspiration in terms of time management since you are the only tri blogger I read who works FT outside the home and has a toddler!
Gobiggreen: I think I will need one (many).
Sounds like a glass of wine would be nice after that early start.
i hear you!! it's crazy how we manage to fit as much in as we do... all in the name of running (and tri-ing) :)
I feel the same way. I think an ironman at 50 MIGHT be possible - but not before then. Your day looks somewhat similar to mine - got to go to sleep now for 5:30 a.m. swim!
OMG, you are crazy busy for sure!! You are a super mom and athlete:)
Thanks for your nice comment:) You made me smile! Have a great weekend!
I knew I couldn't do it once I read "up at 5AM" :o)
