An odd one

I had a really odd run today. The weather was beautiful as I set out for 15 miles, ipod on and ocean by my side, no mom guilt knowing that Petru was going to have fun with grandma at Dover Children's Museum. Ah, the life. I really wanted to keep the pace down today. I ran 10 miles @ 7:09 on Thursday (yes, silly me, I am blaming the Nike free's) and although I felt superhuman on that run, I know I am not. My plan called for 15 @ 7:53, and that was what I needed to run. My route around here in New Castle/Rye is filled with rolling hills for at least 1/2 of it, so that was certain to slow my pace down. I started out slow, first mile 7:50, as planned, but then I got into the scenery and podcast I was listening to, and did not realize that I started going faster. My issue is that once I hit a certain pace, I can't make myself go slower. It's silly and it does not make sense, and I really need to work on this. Anyhow, about 7 miles into the run, my L groin started to feel tight. I stopped and stretched it, but the tightness persisted. By mile 10, it moved between the knee and groin, on the inner side (sorry, I have no anatomy knowledge). I stopped again, hopped on the leg (my stress fracture test) with no pain, tried to find a hot spot but could not. I kept on running. By mile 12 all the tightness was gone. No pain, nada, just tired legs (they were tired even at the beginning of the run). So I am not sure what I should make off this. I think I may try a sports massage (never had one, can you believe it?) and definitely foam rolling. I think my muscles are tired from everything I had them do this past few weeks, and I need to pamper them a little. My 1/2 marathon is in 2 weeks, and I want to be able to run hard then. For that, I need to slow down now. Ah, so hard. This is the time in training when I am running strong and I want to push it even more. This is also the time when injuries start to appear and I need to be careful. Will I be able to? Will see....

Awesome job on your 15 mile run today! You really are very fast and I am so impressed with all of your PRs:) I don't know how you did a half marathon in 1:39!! Right now I am just trying to get my time under 2 hours. I am not sure what is going on with the pain that you were getting during your run. Maybe it was just one of those oddities...hopefully there is nothing to worry about. Keep up the great work! You are going to do so well at your upcoming half marathon!

I understand not being able to slow down. I'm not as fast as you are, but I still find it difficult to slow down once I get comfortable at a faster pace. It's not silly, but I also don't know why it happens. If I'm on a long run (16 or more), I check the pace on my Garmin more often and force myself to slow down each time. Often, that works out for me.

Good job on your 15 miler today!

IF your adductor kicks in like that try to engage your lateral glutes, that sounds odd i know but if its your left adductor make sure that same side's glute, the glute med, more on the side, is firing. sometimes you may have to stop and SHIFT Into your hip, ie stop and shift your pelvis / ie get your weight over your foot on the affected side.

Did that make sense...Hope so:) YES get a massage. Seriously there are places they can go that the foam roller cant:) that sounds creepy! But its not.

I could never run 10 @7:09. Awesome job. That is faster than race pace for me!! My 10 mile and marathon paces are not too different though! Zero fast twitch muscles in this body!! I know what you mean about having trouble slowing down though. I always get progressively faster even when I'm trying to slow down. I'm sure it was just tired legs! Good luck on your half in a couple weeks!!

Hope you get the pain figured out. You might try a tennis ball to release the psoas (between the belly button and the hip bone...roll on it while lifting that leg 'behind' you and the opposite arm). You'll know if you found it.

I've got no advice on the injury but it sounds like you are getting some great runs in and should kick ass at your half - just reign it in over the next two weeks so your body can soak in your hard work!

If you can run 10 in 7:09 pace, I can't WAIT to see what you will do at New Bed!
Watch the groin... but since it went away while running and hasn't reappeared it can't be too much of a concern... :)

I think you hit the nail on the head, maybe you just need a bit of a rest. Your body really has been working hard and treating you well! You are going to have such a speedy half; I cannot wait to hear!

Nice run! We runners are so funny...you talk about starting your run slow at 7:50 pace! If you had started a 15 miler at that pace last it probably would have been fast!

I sometimes have weird pains that will just go away in the middle of a run too. I think when they just go away and there isn't any sign of strain later, then it's fine. Or at least that's how it works with me.
