a few thoughts on my training

I feel very strong these days. My swimming has improved tremendously, and while my form is still imperfect (a combo of breast stroke and crawl), I have speed. I used to need 20 breast strokes to cover a pool length, now I need 15-18. That's huge. More importantly, I learned to love swimming. It is meditative. I repeat the number of the lap as I breath out. My mind is focused on the number and breath. Once in a while after a tough day I just goof off and not work at it, close my eyes and swim-sleep while entering a dreamworld.

My running is going well, too. I think my joint (knee, pubic bone) pains are related to my cycle, but I need to monitor it more clearly. I have heard the same from a couple of friends. Anyhow, no pain lately and running strong. Today I put together my training for Boston. I am still on a wait list, but I hear I'll get in as people drop out. The funny thing is that when Sue mentioned the marathon I was not interested, and then when she signed up it was too late for me to get a spot in the MGH pediatric cancer team - hence, the waitlist. Even funnier, when I put my name on the list I was not that excited, mostly because I love trails and dislike races that go through town and are crowded, but now I am excited. Why? Because Boston qualifying time does not seem undoable. Because I am up for the challenge. Because everyone talks about Boston as something you want to experience. Because there will always be time for trails, as I get older, but my body will not be able to handle road races for too long - hopefully it will this time.

Anther goal is to run a triathlon in 2009. I am thinking of a mini, with a 10k, 1 mile swim, 12 miles bike, and see if I enjoy it.

OK, feel happy with my training, time to watch Amazing Race. I am thinking of signing up, I just need a partners, coz my husband...he'd prefer to watch it on TV.

Good luck with your training for the Boston Marathon. I hope you get selected to run. Just remember it takes longer to recover from long training runs on the roads than it does from trail runs. Plan your easy/recovery days accordingly. From reading your blog posts it sounds like you know your body well so I don’t think you will have any issues. I just want you to stay healthy so you can kick my butt at Wapack again!

PS I added a link to your blog on mine. (Hope you don't mind) You are a thoughtful writer and I enjoy reading your posts. I'm sure others will as well.

Yup....I got the link from Dan....and I too enjoy reading good qulity running blogs.

I would love to run Boston someday...but for me there is really no chance of qulifying unless I can stay the same speed as I am now when I turn 70 then I think it is doable...I am not holding my breath.

Good luck with your running and I hope you do get into Boston

Dan,
I am TERRIFIED of getting injured. I used the FIRST training plan to design my marathon training plan. It has only 3 days of running, 1 speed, 1 tempo and 1 long run. The long runs are done about 30-60 seconds slower than marathon pace. Average weekly mileage is 26 miles, with max mileage 33 miles. I am also going to continue swimming and force myself to take a day off every week. Hopefully this conservative plan will keep me healthy. Oh, and thanks for adding a link of my blog to yours. It's nice to be able to share thoughts with other runners.

Pathfinder, welcome to my blog. I am running Boston for a charity, as it will be my first attempt to a marathon. Will see how it goes...

Hi Girlie,
The biggest factor for me in success was the cross training. I used a modified FIRST plan but used high-intensity, long distance swimming and biking to maintain optimal fitness. It also helps you acheiving your triathlon goal too!

I think you will be fine going with the tempo, speed and long runs. Those 3 workouts are the key in any marathon training program. The other days are just easy recovery runs anyway so you can probably replace them with swimming. One day of total rest is a good idea.

Tell Carlene I said hello.

PS If I didn't get so bored on planes I would consider doing the Amazing Race with you :-)
