We started on the "go" and I fell into a nice rhythm. I really did not know what I could do and frankly did not want to push myself all out. I though HM pace would be nice but I ended up going slightly faster. The first loop was controlled. The second hurt. My legs lost power, which makes sense because aside from this week, I have not run this pace since Baystate training. I ended up with a 30:26, which is my Fresh Pond PR. The course registered as 4:65, for a 6:32 pace, which makes me super happy at this point in time. Nice effort considering that I ran the second loop all by myself (I was first overall men and women - guess the fast guys stayed at home today!).
This is how the course looks like...and also what one has to zig zag around....today I had to jump over an off leash little guy (this would piss me off in a real race, but here, well, dogs are just part of the course)
On my run back home I did 3x15 secs and 3x30 secs hill sprints, and thought a lot about running and racing. I can say I am a confident person in the main aspects of my life: family and work. My confidence in these areas is mostly stable. However, when I don't race for a while, I get really intimidated by paces that I used to be able to hit, or that I would like to hit. Sure, I can reframe those thoughts but there is nothing like a little behavioral experiment (aka race) to get that confidence back up. I think part of the reason why I had such a great 2011, is that I had these confidence boosts often. Sure, there was a physiological effect there too, but the mental boost was what helped the most, I think.
So here I am, 20 weeks from Boston, getting a little confidence boost from the good old Fresh Pond! So happy I raced today and so excited to get back out there this training cycle!

Ahh, been waiting for the fresh pond races to begin! So inspiring and charging for me. Incredible confidence boost here AM. To run this pace without hardly any speed or tempo...sheesh. So great that you have these races to go to. And can't beat that weather!!
As I said earlier, I'm eager to try my racing legs out but unlike you, I don't enjoy racing quite as much...just the thought of a 5k or shorter distance race makes my stomach sick. But maybe this is all the more reason for me to face these fears and just do it!
Always nice to get a little confidence boost-- and physiological one too :)
So, AM's turkey trot is a fresh pond PR. I like it! Free and fast!!
The courses around here have plenty of traffic on them too, but at least the people on bikes and with dogs have sense to get outta the way when they see a pack of runners coming. Most of them. :)
I Like what you are doing here! Can't wait for your next race, AM.
Now I am wondering what your usual pre-race meal is, and why you did something different.
Confidence sometimes comes from the most unlikely places. Good job, young lady! (maybe it's the oatmeal and coffee before-one of my faves;)!)
The course looks nice-flat and fast too. Wishing you continued mojo as you prep for Boston!
Keep up the positive work, and yes, Amanda-go for it!!
I've been smiling for you all day:) YES, a little confidence boost from good ole Fresh Pond was JUST what you needed! To run this well right now out of marathon recovery before you've even brought much speed back in and also to maintain that pace running solo for a loop. Tough to do! Really really glad you decided to do this-fantastic kickoff for the next 20 weeks. 2012 is going to be an EPIC year for you in SO many ways.
Yes, you've trained Petru well-ha! I think my kids have never seen me sleep. They would probably think I was dead if was sleeping at 8 am-ha!
Again, great job today. So happy for you!!! Jealous of those temps and shorts too!
Nice race- good time! I love it when its low-key, no pressure! addy wakes me up too...by crying, though :)
I will elaborate on the "training to get strong to be fast" I just skipped all the physiology stuff. I guess it is actually quite interesting.
Low-pressure races are the best! Sounds like you enjoyed it once again. What a blessing for Petru to be OK (not needy, etc) while you sleep in!
Nice! Fresh pond is awesome because it's every week and low pressure, but I also hate it. On off weeks, my coach would have us run the single loop and I always felt like my lungs would burst. But...if it was super close to my house...I'd run it too. Low pressure races make great workouts! :)
20 week?! Ooooh snap...I've got to get on it!
What a great way to kick of the 20 week countdown. I think we can all agree you can have all the talent in the world, but PR's are made from confidence! Great job!
I know you train very hard for your PRs, but yes, I'm jealous. I train hard too, but I NEVER go out for a tempo ish pace, no pressure race, and leave with a PR. Amazing as always!
if you have time, please check out my blog today. I need some opinions and always love your feedback.
