Whenever I start dreading my workouts, taper knocks on my door! Good timing!
I celebrated the weekend with 70.5 miles (66bike + 4.5 transition run) on Saturday, and 14.7 (13 run + 1.7 OW swim) on Sunday.
Every time I start a long ride I feel mojo-less. I really don't want to go. I did not have much time to dilly dally on Saturday because we had a packed day and I needed to get home to give Chris a break (who again gets the "best husband" award for showing Petru SUCH a great time while I was on the bike. I am convinced the neighbourhood moms are terrible jealous as I never see another dad spend as much quality time with their kids as Chris does; OK, gotta make sure Chris reads this post:). In typical fashion, after 10 miles I started having fun; except the M%$%S F%&$# back pain showed up and had to take several stops. Still, I biked 56 miles in a little over 3 hours, with a HR of 139, so kept the pace very comfortable. Back home I grabbed a turkey burger and headed for the run. My meat craving is through the roof! I ran Garminless, amazed at how tough my stomach is. Lucky! Back home I had 1 hour to fill up on food, take an icebath and splash water all over me (no time for a shower) and take Petru to t-ball. Back home, one more hour and barbecue with friends. In bed after midnight.
The fatigue hit on Saturday after my run. I did 13 miles with 11 progression ending with 5 miles sub 7:15. I could barely walk when I got home. Petru and I kicked Chris out of the house and had some quality mom/son time before dropping him off at a bday party. Then I took a glorious 30 min nap before heading to Walden for a swim. My arms hurt like hell during the swim, but when I got back Chris told me I swam 10 min faster, so now I know why! Evening was spent working and watching basketball with Chris.
Today I did the crazy brick session again. I biked for 30 min tempo, then put the bike on the trainer and ran 2K @ 10K pace, than 30 min on the bike with alactates, than 2k @ 10K pace, than 30 min on the bike with alactates, than 2K @ 10K pace, than 30 min on the bike with alactates, than 2X2K @ 5K pace. Then I ran 2.5 mile with 1.25 hill home. This workout sounds hard, but it really is not. Part of my issue with races longer than a HM is that I get bored and have to work hard to keep focus. This is actually a reason why I do marathons and HIMs:) In a workout like this I never get bored. Sure, it is hard at times, but I know I can handle that pain since it won't last long.
This week I am tapering the run, but keeping the swim and bike up. I am getting excited but also SO nervous for the race. I googled my back pain and it is clear to me that it is due to my bike position. I am not comfortable in aero so I ride the handle bars and sit like a scaredy cat, as opposed to pushing my pelvis out. I will work on that:)
Such a great weekend of racing. I loved tracking everyone at Mooseman and Honu, and cheering virtually on marathons and other races. Some had awesome races, other did not reach their goals, but this is the beauty of racing; just like life, anything can happen on race day!

you are a machine! I wish I enjoyed biking like you seem to (aside from hurting). anyway, I have seen you post this workout before and wondered both times... what are alactates?
Sounds like yo've put in the quality work... race day is easy when your training is hard. :) You'll do great!
I really need to stop reading your blog because I always get jealous of all the hard stuff you get to do. Not that my workouts are easy but they are just different and shorter and when I read about your training I am always like "I want to try that!!!"
You are going to do so well... You are on fire in these training sessions! Amazing!
A lot of times I stumble into the taper period too. But I'm never sure how I feel about that - guess I need it at that point.
Yes, I rag about taper but good timing is right! If I were in your shoes I would be DESPERATE to taper!!
Love your weekend celebrations-ha! I celebrated by spectating a 5K and eating Smores:) Through in a couple of mile repeats for good measure!
Chris sounds like such an awesome dad. Little boys are so lucky to have dads that give them genuine attention! Max ADORES Joe. I hope this means he will always want to come home when he grows up even if his wife doesn't like me-ha!!!
Man, you just work out SO hard....
I am hoping your back cooperates. I don't doubt your ability to push through regardless but I just really hope it doesn't give you much trouble. Get some rest:)
Obviously I can't spell. Threw not through.....
AM, I'm tired just reading this. I know, I'm so not clever in my comment...ha! But really, I am just sitting here with my jaw hanging open in AWWW at how freaking hard you train!!! I can't imagine!! I don't even know what half this tri talk is about but I do know that you are a Bad ASS! If you didn't think you were before then I don't know how you could deny it now! Can't say that it inspires me to do a Tri though...kind of scares me away...ha ha...but you do inspire me to go out there and kick my ass in running.
so excited to see how you do! I am learning more about times now and after reading Iron Mary's recap, I'm starting to gain some tri schema to help me scaffold my triathlon reading here! Oh , and since I used scaffold and schema then I might as well throw in my other favorite word relating to literacy instruction...metagcognition....I do PLENTY of that when I'm trying to follow this new genre of reading about bricks, alactates...
Take care of that back lady! And good for you for getting plenty of protein! And Chris sounds like a good catch!! I want to see some pictures!
what a weekend! You pack SO much in and I really like how you are just pitiless with yourself in training - you really do push, even when you're in pain!
Impressive stuff, though i hope the back pain improves soon. Enjoy the (sort of) taper.
ENJOY the run taper and hope the back behaves! Good luck at your race!!! :)
you had a turkey burger BEFORE your trun? wow girl, i want your stomach! you are dominating these workouts!
Wow...nice job with your training!! I'm sorry you're having more back pain. Do you have a bike shop where you can take your bike to get refitted?? A good fit will make a world of difference!!
Oh man....I think my legs would have been dead long before the last 5 miles of that run. It is pretty awesome what you are pushing yourself through!
I am also curious about the alactates.
So glad you figured out what's causing the back issues so you can work through it.
Great job on the swim! The speed will hopefully put you well past all the other 1000 swimmers in your race. Holy wetsuits, that's a lot in the pond at once!
Blech. Sorry about the back stuff. I hope you can get that figured out soon!
I totally understand the mojo-less feeling before a long ride. Especially since you do all of them alone as I did last year. I suppose it's kinda like the first few miles of a long run. It takes a while for the legs and mind to meet.
Your doing amazing!!
You are so freaking awesome, not much else to say :)
