Some days are rough

I had a bummer of a day workout wise today!

I woke up early and it was thundering and raining. I had a 44 mile ride, which I knew will not happen outside. I changed my back tire, put the bike on the trainer, and biked for 90 min before the sky cleared up and accuweather assured me that the sky will be thunder free until the afternoon. I changed the tire again, and went for a 20 mile ride @ race pace. All well, except that on Tuesday I got a nasty yeast infection, so you can only imagine how being on the bike with that was. I filed it in my mind as "lesson in mental toughness". And Chris learned that he is not to talk to me, ha!

In the afternoon I had 9 miles with 2X15 min @ HMP. I ignored the thermometer which said 95 degrees, and headed to the track. By the time I got there (2.5 miles) my clothes were completely wet, and the water in my fuel belt was hot. I started the first interval - I typically do these @ 10K pace even though they are prescribed for HMP, since they are so short) and made a deal to stay @ HMP. I did, except that when I stopped my entire body was so hot and I just could not make myself do the other interval. I don't remember when was the last time I skipped an interval, but I did today. I ran the rest of the miles slow and took several stops on the 1.25 mile patch of steep hills that got me home. A little bummed about this...

The good news is that the weather for the Patriot is looking good so far, rain and cold temps. Honestly, I am not concerned about rain, I just want cool temps and no thunder.

The real taper starts next week. Stay tuned for phantom pains (so far I am SO thankful for how my body managed to hold up to this amount of training), mood swings, weight gain, nerves and excitement. For now, I am READY to decrease the load...

Wow that is brutal. You really tested your mental toughness today. Very impressive.

Definitely sounds like a rough day and the days leading up to it (yeast infection...ugggh)! Man, it is HOT there! I have nothing to complain about with my high 70/low80 degree race. Ha! I love how you say that you usually do 10k pace because the interval is short...15 minutes? this seems forever to me to hold on to just HM pace in a workout. :) Phantom pains? This is only the second time I've ever heard this term but I now know that all my aches and weird pains those taper weeks were not unusual. :)

Hope tomorrow is a better one for you. Don't beat yourself up too much about skipping that interval AM! Hope you can let it go and not let it put a cloud over your evening. :) I know how you are about missing workouts and I'm sure you're similar when you cut a workout short. :)

I'm not sure how you guys live in that muck, let alone run in it. I guess I used to having lived in Iowa and Alabama but I've spent so much time in CO I would probably pass out just visiting you - haha. Nice job girl keeping up your mental strength through all this!

Sorry I've been so absent. You are a warrior in this heat! It has been horrible, hasn't it? I say you get big points for taking one tire off, another tire on, ride indoors, swap tires again and then continue outside and then run on the afternoon...and its been a scorcher! That takes determination.

Yeast infection? No need to explain.

Oh-really don't even want to imagine the bike in that predicament. Yes, not enjoyable AT ALL, but true to Ana Maria, mental toughness is a given!

I don't remember the last time you skipped an interval either! I'm going to cut you a break for the 95 degrees-but just this once-ha! Seriously, heat is going to KILL me and I hate HOT water....

Yep, I'm actually hoping for rain for my race, cloudy and rain. It's not going to be cool and as of now I'm bucking a headwind the whole way but rain would be welcome! I hope you have IDEAL conditions! Are you gonna post some goals here!! I'm truly SO excited for you!!!! Enjoy your taper!!!!

You are a tough lady, honey - most of us would have given up long before all that tire swapping etc - and so I hope you don't beat yourself up. I imagine you'll really benefit from a missed workout AND the taper - you're so fit, all you need now is to be mentally strong. And if you can cycle that hard with a yeast infection I have absolutely NO doubt about your mental toughness.

Lordy. That is serious. Now you will be ready for ANYTHING come race day. But let's hope you don't have to be ready for that again!

Don't beat yourself up over that dropped interval. It's really no big deal. Your training has been solid and that last one wouldn't have added any more fitness anyways. Time to focus on taper. And racing.

girl, you are mentally tough! way to stick out a trainer ride and get out there for a run.

i ran in the thunderstorms last night. i thought i was going to be struck by lightning.

heading to patriot course tomorrow to test it out!

You're one tough chic!! Be careful in that heat! :)

umm. that is a ridiculous amount of working out! for me... not for you of course :)

this weather is a tough contender. better to rein it in a little. in my (non-expert) opinion, running HMP instead of 10k was probably just as much work for your body with the added heat, so you still got in a good workout.

I keep thinking my body and mind will "learn to run hard in the heat", but each time I think that, my body always responds in the same SLOW manner. Urgh!

Sounds like a good day to bring a space blanket in a pouch, just in case. I had a day like that a few moths ago...chilled to the bone, No fun! But you feel more hard-core for going through it.

I am sure your body is ready to take the rest and make any super repairs and be 100% healthy for competition! I actually like to taper- With all the hard work, it seems like it's necessary for a longer race. You will be on FIRE.

20 weeks...does that mean long build up, or high build up? Can't wait to hear all about your new PR. Do you do any type of mental prep?
