May stats and others

RUN: 154 miles
BIKE: 400 miles - low, but a record for me
SWIM: 14.25 miles - low for triathlon, but I am so slow that swimming is time consuming for me:)

Managed to do coreX2/week and arms/planks 2X/week.

#####
I am still having fun with triathlon training, but "he" gets on my nerves sometimes.

Like today, when for no apparent reason, I could barely swim 50 yards, and my easy 5 mile run was sooo unpleasant. Grr. I am getting used to having tough workouts. I've been putting in a lot of miles of swim/bike/run, and my body is still getting used to it all.

No 5K for me this Sunday. I feel like my coccyx is going to separate in 2 when I pick up the pace. Not a pleasant feeling, so no 5K. It is getting better, though:)

I decided to use one of Hudson's marathon plans for my fall marathons. I am tired of the FIRST plan, and I want to do more mileage after my half iron. It will be an experiment and I am excited.

This months I will be starting to do some open water swimming at Walden. Chris and Petru will be in the kayak ready to save me if I start panicking. I need to practice getting on my back if I get tired, as I know the first 400m or so are going to be tough.

I am learning more and more about how important warming up is. I need about 5 miles or running, 10 of biking and .5 of swimming before I am ready to pick up the pace/get on pace.

I have been reading a ton on triathlon training. It seems that there is some consensus about biking and running, but not about swimming (focusing on form and drills vs putting in the miles and form will improve vs doing intervals to get faster vs doing long swims at race pace and increasing the distance up to the race event distance or even longer).

Probably the best advice on racing your first half ironman came from Gordo and you can read it here: http://www.coachgordo.com/gtips/race_strategy/pacing_your_first_half_ironman.html

Ugh, that's so disappointing about the 5K, but obviously there will be others. I'm glad you're starting to feel better.

Those are some impressive monthly stats. How much time are you spending a week with all the swimming and biking that you're doing?

Me, I've completely stopped cross-training all together. I've just been running. I looked up my May running stats and found that I put in 227 miles! Seems like a lot, but I'm still doing less overall time than when I was biking and rowing. Once I have the baby and things settle down, I might be thinking about upping the mileage a bit for a marathon training cycle as well. It should be interesting!

Keep feeling better!

Sorry about the 5k :(. Hopefully you'll get in some others this summer, seems that's the race that liters the race circuit. I don't know much about triathlon training but have a good friend that just finished her first full Ironman; she always says that time is easiest made up on the running, second on the biking and 3rd on the swimming.

Glad you're feeling better :)!

tri training is sooo interesting. i love watching chris with all 3 sports and i love talking to all these amazing triathletes we have around us. there are SO many little things you don't even think of that influence the race, its nuts! he has been really lucky to find this amazing group of athletes.

nice job on may!

I love you blog, have been reading it since the fall. I too have been getting hooked on triathlon training... I'm actually moving to Boston (West Roxbury) this weekend from central PA where I've lived the past 5 years. I am hoping to do open water swims at Walden as well...Maybe we can meet up some time?

Rachel, I read your blog too- we share the same profession, you know:). Are you going to McLean or Cambridge? Lets meet when you move here!

it takes me a long time to warm up in the water as well. pool vs. open water is so much different. but most of the time i am finding my groove OK. i am ditching the speed work etc and just focusing on the distance. but i think i will pick that back up after my first!! sprint in two weeks.

its' so great to be outside!

Wow, you did so great on miles for the month of May! Both your running and biking has been awesome:) It sounds like your tri training is going well minus some growing pains. I am sure that your body will adapt and it will soon feel as normal as running does for you:) I am sorry to hear about your 5K! Have fun with your swimming...love how you said that your boys will be there in a Kayak if things get ugly:) Good luck to you with all of your intense training!

It takes a bit of time to adjust to the increased workload that tri requires. It seems it should be easier; running is so hard on the body and you do less when you are training for a tri. BUT, the other stuff is a lot of time--and the body needs time to adjust from working out under 10 hours a week, to working out many more than that! Sorry about the 5K...

Hey first off those are impressive stats! Don't give yourself a hard time! And secondly - good call on the 5K. You are now focusing on your tri training and you can't do everything at the same time. I think it is hard to get all this training in and your strong running history is going to make you set high standards for yourself in all areas - give yourself time. Just keep plugging away, plugging away and you will get there.

As for warmups - don't I know it. The first bit I ALWAYS think "I can't do this". But we can!

400 miles is NOT low for someone who's just recently gotten into biking! You're doing a lot more than most beginner triathletes. :)

none of those stats are low! umm you ran standard marathon-training mileage AND biked a crapload AND swam a bunch too. :) i can't wait to see how much this tri-bug catches on to you!

too funny about hubs and petru being in the kayak to save you :) i'm sure you won't need them.

Ana-Maria. I think your training is progressing just nicely. There are always people doing more/less than you are who go faster/slower than you. You need to find what works for *you* just as you have - and still seek to do - with your run training.

At some point the issue becomes not how to train more/better but how to get the most value from your training on race day.

In a triathlon there are sooo many more external factors that can influence your race than in a straight run. As you work through your training begin to think about these and plan how you'll deal with them.

In the longer tri's you'll find having some effective 'coping strategies' will save you buckets of time and enable you to get the most from all the hard work you are doing.

Keep up the good stuff!

Cheers, Paul :-)
