March has been a great month!
I had a huge PR in the half marathon.
I swam my first continuous mile.
I did a little biking after a complete break since December 2009.
Here are the stats:
Running: 218 miles (mileage record for this low mileage gal)
Bike: 70 miles (better than 0)
Swim: 9.75 miles
Abs: 1000
Push-ups: 300
ITB/knee strength sessions: 10 (10 min each)
Pilates/core with weights sessions: 10 (20 min each)
Other fun stats:
Icebaths: 15
Rolling (with foam roller): 21 sessions.
Injuries: adductor pain during 1 run; hip pain during one easy run; abdominal pain (muscular), R side, for 3 days (probably swimming related); heel pain at the beginning of 3 runs. Weird, no? Maybe I am too much in tune with my body:)
Nr of pints of blueberries consumed (my new addiction): 19
Nr of gels: 5 (2 in the half marathon, one per each additional long run). I am tapering off of these and just eat a bigger meal the night before (I like real food way better, though the Chocolate Nr 9 gels are pretty tasty and much healthier than the regular Gu!)

My 2 year old loves blueberries. Loves them. They are the perfect size, not too sweet and just always yummy. So I have eaten more blueberries in the last six months than I have in my first 41 years because we always have them around.
That's amazing you only ate 5 gels all month. I don't count how may I eat, but I bet in the course of 4 weeks it's more like 15!
Good that you keep track of the little nagging injuries and first signs of them. I think it's important not to ignore that stuff bc your body always whispers to you before it starts screaming. ;)
when i read your post about boston strategy - my eys glazed over. I can't wrap my head around speeds like that :)
I think a 2 week taper is optimal. Any longer than that and you start to go a little bonkers. And don't worry. Your brain will come around - esp. on marathon day!
I love your monthly stats. How do you keep track of all of this. Especially thinks like the foam roller. I usually just do it when the mood strikes. You must keep a very detailed journal. I would love to learn more about that....(plug for good taper post:)
15 ice baths! Now that's tough!
Hi,
I was going to comment on yesterday's post and lost track of time, too busy!
I'm doing a two week taper and this week feels a lot like last week, not much lighter at all. Can't wait for next week!
Regarding your strategy: I remember trying to hold a good pace right off the bat in Boston which was hard because there were SO many people. I felt a little worried because I wasn't able to hit my target pace for a long, long time and then I felt like I had wasted time. Does your pace allow for the pace which you'll run for the first six miles? Just curious. I'm working with that Excel Spreadsheet pace/chart for Boston and it allows for the hills but not a slow start due to crowds. What do you think?
Thanks,
meg
Kristen, I don't actually keep a detailed log, but I am getting better. I always do IT exercises and pilates/core/abs on the days I have a key workout. I also use the roller on those days plus on a recovery run day. It's a habit, now, so I don't even think about it:)
Michelle, I used to eat tons of gels, but then I realized that I like real food better. In races, however, I use a lot of gels - probably will take 6 at Boston!
Nice stats! I hardly ever use gels in training but I will probably take 4 or maybe 5 in Boston. I'm hoping for 44 and sunny to be exact!! That was my last marathon temp and I thought it was awesome. Yes, much better cold than hot! I have never taken an ice bath, used a foam roller or stretched after running. I'm thinking perhaps I should take a little better care of myself if I want to do this for awhile!! 19 pints of blueberries..lol!!!
Wow, you had an amazing month!! I am so impressed with every little detail of your training...you are such a fantastic athlete and runner:)
I am also weening myself from gels. I agree that normal food or even bars are a better alternative.
you are an amazing runner! i have truly enjoyed watching you blossom (and fly away!) this past year or so of following you. you've grown (in speed) so much - very impressive :) and all while not-running 100mile weeks! there is hope for me yet.
I love the stats you keep! haha! (I do that too...) 210 miles is my record for a month--you've trumped me! :)
Awesome stats, girl! you're doing to do some amazing things in Boston, I can't wait to see how it all plays out for you! I haven't had the best journey getting to Boston, but I got to taper time in one solid piece and no matter how I perform there, I am blessed! I'll think of you out there on the course and be honored to be there along with you...you've been a true inspiration to me and I am smiling so big for you right now that you are doing so awesome and that I know you!! Whoohooo!!! Email me or Meg, we'd love to meet up with you at one point in Boston if possible!! Have a great Easter!!!
Great month. Sounds like you're more than ready for Boston.
HOW do you manage to have even one ice bath???? I could not even manage to get into a bath of cold water from the tap - let alone any ice. Maybe if I put my wetsuit on I could do it ... and I'd get compression at the same time too :-)
