It's been so long since I blogged that I needed a minute to familiarize myself with the new blogger layout. Ha! Lots to say, here it goes, in no particular order.
* Just got back from a little get away (avoid the word "vacation" bc I actually had to work about half of the time) in Connecticut to visit friends and go to Lake Compounce, a waterpark/ amusement park. My little big 48 inches guy is obsessed with waterparks and we ran out of all Massachusetts had to offer. And 48 inches is a very important height - it symbolizes that he does not need mommy with him on the "lights out", "death tunnel", "twister" and other such "thrilling" rides...
* It's been one on my busiest summers in terms of work. Lots of grants to write. I love my job so much that I know I will do it to some extent for the rest of my life past retirement, but the stress of meeting deadlines and responsibilities that affect many peoples is not always, particularly in the summertime:).
* The stress is most likely linked to my recent encounter with shin splints (posterior) on my L leg. This is the type of pain I could run through as it gets better after I warm up, but this strategy combined with icing did not lead to a speedy recovery (ha, ha!) so I have been resorting to the bike, elliptical and pool/pond and I am *almost* ready to return to running.
* Dealing with this setback has been easier than I would have imagined, largely because work has been very busy, but also because after running in the crazy temps we've had, I enjoy the AC at the gym and the ability to sleep in and work out at any hour I have available regardless of weather. In addition, I did some pretty hard workouts on the bike and elliptical, keeping my HR on the elliptical within MAF, tempo and VO2 max range (which is very hard because of the lack of wind and pounding!) so I feel I am pretty fit. I only miss running when I read about it, which I did little of during the past week.
* Super excited for a girls weekend coming up in 6 sleeps. Two dear friends that I met through this blog are going to come from far and even further away to spend the weekend with me. I hope to be able to run and take them to some beautiful trails in the area. If that won't be possible, there will be many more things to do...my fridge is stacked, the wine is bought, my boys will leave the house Friday morning and my last grant of the summer will be in Thursday night! Happy!

sorry about the shin splints but major WOOP WOOP to runner friends, WINE and your house to yourself - sounds like a dream come true to this SAHM of 3 ;)
Oh, summer doesn't ever slow down! Too fun that you took the big 48 inch man to the waterparks. That would be a hoot :)
Sorry about the shin splints, but glad you have found a way to keep cool and still get in some Vo2 max workouts.
6 sleeps is all? Ah!! So much fun in store for you and the girls. Will try to figure out the skype thing. You will have lots of fun memories after this one :).
Your summer sounds busy, stressful and fun all in one. No fun about the shin splints but glad you are taking time to cross train during this stressful grant writing. So excited to give you a big hug in 6 sleeps!! I'm not near near near prepared with having mall my ducks in a row but hey, I can just throw some things in a bag and head to the airport...sounds like you have all the good stuff there...wine...food...YOU. :)
I was thinking of you on Thursday and how much more enjoyable it would be to be at a waterpark than sweltering on a fair ride in 95 degrees!! I bet Petru had a blast!!
I know you've been swamped with work! The shin splints suck obviously but taking the situation as it is, I hear you on the crazy temps and convenience of the gym too. In the summers with running I rarely consider the TM as even an option and in the winter when I'm very busy, I sometimes think I have have less stress because I add the TM into the equation which can be done at any time instead of working around the weather... You've been doing such a super job of keeping up your fitness as you always do!!
I can't adequately describe how excited I am to come! You have been so gracious and accommodating and welcoming and I can hardly wait to raid your fridge and drink your wine.....and oh yeah-and give you a hug-ha! Yes, 6 sleeps!!! Hope the week goes well finishing up your grant!! We will celebrate:)
You're going to have so much fun with Jenn and Amanda - so jealous! A trail run with the girls would be a blast!
Oh shin splints - bleh! I had those terribly in high school and college when I ran competitively but once I got out of those spikes, I never had them again. Hope you get back to running soon - pain free!!
Sorry work's been so nutsoid. In this crazy economy though, busy is better than not!
Enjoy!!
OH man shin splints are awful! But yes you can through them and they will pass.
Have a great time with your buds - it does the soul SUCH good to hang out with girlfriends!
Stupid shin splints! Busy-ness can be a blessing, however. Just bring your shampoo and conditioner to combat the swimming:)
Sorry to hear you had a set back in running, but I'm sure you'll be speeding away again in no time! Busy work is good, better than the alternative right? Hope the girls weekend goes wonderfully! Sounds like fun!
@ Vicky Cook - Yes! Time with good friends trumps running:) But, my shin is better so I am hoping for a few miles with friends:)
@Raina - sorry I have been a stranger. It's been a busy summer. Thinking about you a ton. Yes, super excited for A and J's visit. You will be missed!
@Amanda -yes, fun and stressful! I kinda like it like this. Yes, super excited to see you!
@Jenn - you are always so encouraging to me. Yes, I can't describe how excited I am as well!
@Jill - thanks, almost done with the shin splints!
@ Lindsey! Yes!
@ Petra - I was not able to run through them this time, but did manage to use the elliptical so I think I have not lost much fitness.
Can't wait to see you running again, friend!! Hope all is well there and that maybe you and the girls can get out for a short group run. When do they get there?
Oooh enjoy your girls weekend! Sounds like a blast!
