What do I eat?

Petra asked me what I eat while HIM training. And how could I resist, since her name is the feminine equivalent of my little man's name?

Here is how I eat...

#I don't count calories so I have no idea how many I eat daily.
#I eat when I am hungry (mostly) - though I believe in comfort food (I eat chocolate every night), and in using food as reward (frappuccino is my mantra during the last miles of a tough run).
#I try to eat mostly unprocessed food, but I do eat cereals, breads and lunch meats, which are all processed.
#I believe in moderation. I don't believe in completely eliminating foods/drinks that I like (ex., diet coke is not healthy, but one/day is not going to kill me).
# I try to eat a balanced diet of proteins, carbs and fats (though I try to eat mostly good fats).
# I eat a ton of vegetables, because I love them. We get a farm share, so every week Chris and/or I make a huge stir fry, and during the week I use it to top salads for lunches.
# I rarely have fat free anything. I tend to go with low fat - the fat keeps me full longer, and I don't like the extra sugar added onto the fat free things.
# I don't like pasta or rice, so I don't eat them unless they are served to me by someone else. But, I love bread and eat a bagel every single day, as well as loads of cereal.
# I never eat dessert on my own, but I always eat a few bites of Chris's (he does not mind, he uses this as an excuse to get seconds-=. In general, a few bites are enough for me.
# I eat"all the time" (that is what Chris says), but I eat small portions.
# I can't stand being hungry and can get quite irritable when hungry. Some people can skip meals, I can't even skip a snack.

Here is what I eat....

* Kashi go lean crunch cereal with LOTS of low fat milk. I eat about 2 bowls a day. In the winter I have oatmeal instead.
* low fat whipped cottage cheese with blueberries.
* peanut butter (I know almond butter is healthier, but I like the taste of the peanut butter better, so I go with what I like)
* salads with grilled veggies and turkey, chicken, salmon or grass fed beef (I try to have at least one of each weekly).
* hummus with slim pretzels (TJ's everything slims).
* whole wheat or cinnamon raisin bagels with pb and jelly.
* fruits: cantaloupe, bananas, blueberries, apricots, plums, peaches, apples. I have at least 3 fruits daily.
* all fruit popsicles.
* Starbucks frappuccino light, coffee kind.
* dark chocolate, TJ's dark chocolate covered slims, a few icecream bites, a cookie, something sweet at the end of the day.
* Cape Cod natural potatoes chips - just a few at a time.
* almonds.
* Zbars (cliff for kids, taste much better than regular cliff bars) and Luna bars.
* smoothies - I mix blueberries, banana, ice, kefir and voila, I have my recovery drink!

Here is what I think about weight...
I don't think thinner is better. I did, when I was younger, I don't anymore. I'd rather sacrifice a few minutes (yes, minutes) in a marathon, then get skinnier! I don't think women marathoners look good (Kara G is the exception). I do think women triathletes look much better. Chrissy Wellington weighs in at 135 lbs and 5'8'' (her BMI is higher than mine) and she is super fast without being super skinny. As I age, I get nervous about sagging skins or breast or butt (and I like my butt), which can happen if you lose too much weight. I don't think that is attractive (for me). I would never want to be known as the skinny old lady. I like to be strong and fit and happy.

Great post! I also eat a ton of cereal...its my comfort food. I also usually eat at least 2 bowls a day; one for breakfast, and one for a snack

Great food "guidelines" (not rules) - very similar to mine! Except I like whole grain pasta and brown rice too, bread not as much. Big fan of kefir and dark chocolate. And I also eat "all the time," small portions.

I am trying to lose weight but that's my own deal after being overweight (and then obese) my whole life. Going for slow and steady weight loss and it seems to be working for me. I'll never be skinny and don't want to be - just fit and strong.

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for sharing, I was deeply engrossed in what you wrote b/c this food nutrition to fuel my running is a contant battle for me. One of my favorite books, which I got off your blog site: Racing Weight. I can't keep my weight at racing weight, but I do know I run better at it! And I'm a huge fan of Kashi cereal, too, and had that for breakfast and lunch today - yay :).

GREAT post! I echo your sentiments...I just want to fuel my body so that I can be strong and healthy and recover quickly! I had never thought about being known as the "skinny old lady!" I guess that's not so bad, as long as you FEEL awesome, strong and are still moving forward as a fit woman!
P.S. I can NEVER give up Cape Cod chips, never!!

Thanks honey - love that post! I was wondering because with all that exercise you are doing you must be getting very hungry and you pretty much answered that one. I like it because your diet is "normal" though healthy - I don't see too many crazy shakes in there...

Also really liked your update on weight. It's kind of a big dark ghoul out there in the workout world isn't it? People DO use endurance sports to justify extreme skinniness and it's an interesting issue. I like your update and totally agree - Catherine Deneuve said that after 40 it's your ass or your face - I'm chosing a slightly plumper face and hey - my ass will be slightly bigger as well. Oh - and judging by your photos - you look gorgeous so stick with what you're doing!

We eat a lot alike! I love Kashi cereal, but stopped buying it because Kaylee has life threatening reactions to soy and it has soy in it. I try to keep the house soy free. I eat tons of fruits and make myself a smoothie almost everyday! One of my favorite snacks is hummus and pretzels too! Oh and peanut butter is one of my favorite foods...

I do sometimes count calories. Being pregnant I've been taking in a ridiculous amount of calories. I'm almost 37 weeks pregnant and have gained 19-20 pounds, but I've been eating like 3300 calories a day! I honestly don't know how I haven't turned into a small continent. I think the baby exercises a lot too. ;)

I love your food philosophy! I have to stay I've learned to have a mucher healthier attitude about food living in Spain for so many years. It sounds so basic, but it's so important to enjoy meals and to eat lots of fruit and veggies.

I think we eat very similar!! I tend to graze all day, little portions, mostly healthy stuff - not just cause it's good for me but b/c my body doesn't do well with high fat or processed things. Must have trained it well. Thanks for sharing. It's always interesting to see what other people eat while training. Maybe if I eat exactly what you eat I will become as fast as you! A girl can hope...

I eat a lot like you, at least in the last 6 months. It is probably why I lost all the baby weight (finally!). I am down to what I call 'my fighting weight'; where I am most comfortable.

I am with you, skinnier is not better. I like a healthy, athletic physique over any other kind. I think muscle is sexy, and thankfully, so does my husband!

breast feeding will also make your boobs saggy, take it from me!! ha!

Cool to see what you eat. always fun to learn more about bloggy tri peeps.

and agree w/weight too. But i think Chrissie Wellington looks SO thin, but has SO much muscle to haul the mail- hence why she weighs 135?

great post, we eat a lot of similar things (minus the meat). i used to eat a TON of kashi go lean crunch last year, its my all time fav cereal but i finally figured out it was causing me really bad stomach aches :( so no more for me. i still LOVE cereal and eat it very often.

i really like what you said about weight too, its very refreshing to hear from someone else and thats pretty much how i feel too.

Meg: Yup, I guess you can be "skinny old lady" and happy, I just don't think I would be happy that way:)
Regina: I guess I got lucky on the breast dept, or maybe it is because I only breast fed 3 months?
Petra: I try to stay away from supplements, processed recovery drinks for athletes, etc. I like real food/drink best:)
AM: Hm, I think Chrissy looks great (at least based on the pics on her blog), but my favorite is Bree Wee. She looks amazingly strong and fit!
Katie: You are going to be back to prebaby weight in no time, and you'll be speedy, too!

Haha I think about that too, being my body type is more prone to skinny. Look at your parents and that will be how we look when we are 70-80+. I think you can do all you can but genetics wins! I am jealous you can eat that Kashi. I wont give you details but it is too fibrous for me, but i love it! :) aron and i may have the same GI issues!

Great post, and very interesting. When training, calories are not a big deal for me because it all seems to balance out. Ionly wish I could practice your moderation. If I ate 2 potato chips, forget about it, I'd go all in.

GoBigGreen - I absolutely agree with you. My husband is skinny and eats 3 bagels for breakfast, etc. It's mostly in the genes. I think so many people try to fight their natural weight, but the body always returns to its setpoint.
