I also have a little race on Sunday. Except that the race might not happen.
"Currently the race is planned to go on. However we are watching the weather carefully and we estimate that it is a 10% chance the race will be held. and a 90% likelyhood it will be cancelled.
We will post the final decision as early as possible - Our goal is to post the decision by mid-day Friday, but reserve the right to hold off until Sunday 5AM in case the weather forecast changes. (very low probability of that)".
I've tapered this week and ran only 30 miles thus far, mostly easy. The snow is supposed to hit on Saturday afternoon so I should be able to have a Fresh Pond race on Saturday morning! In 2 weeks I am scheduled to run another HM, so all is well really. And truth be told, I needed a bit of a break:) I scheduled a massage tomorrow in hope of getting some relief for the back, but I know that back pain is something that kinda takes its time. I've been here before:)
In other news, vacation week is almost over for my son and my husband. Lots of adventures for them and a bit of jealousy on my part, ha! Chris and I got to enjoy a nice dinner out and some blue grass music last night. I may or may not have had my phone confiscated while I was checking emails under the table during sets:) Chris's drumming band is playing a "real gig" on March 1st and am so excited to go hear him play. So proud of him for picking up drumming a year ago, sticking to it and having a ton of fun in the process. Plus, as much as I love him, I also love a Thursday night all alone in the house. As much as I love racing, I think I am ready for another "high", particularly as I approach 40 and my body is starting to screech! We shall see what will come to me! Trail running seems very very attractive! Raina, if only you lived closer:)

I thought races never got cancelled! This is the first year I am not running the Hampton Half which is what I think you are talking about. Crazy.
First of all- almost 40?! I thought you were 30 this whole time! :-)
Next, glad to hear you've been able to train through some of these little hiccups. I think that is just part of it with marathon training. I'm sure the massage will be very helpful.
I am always jealous of your Saturday morning pond races! Glad you will get that in before the snow. I can't believe the 90% race off prediction. Like you said, good thing you have another in 2 weeks! I assume you will be refunded? Crazy!! I don't blame you for so much TM training. I don't know how everyone up north does it in the winter. Constant snow and ice- I would be on the TM all the time!
You were so smart to plan these two half marathons close together! Crazy weather there..
Sorry you hit the ice. Ice and lightning are two things I don't like for a run. I bet this massage will do the trick and you will taper and either have a great race this Sunday, or put in some good miles and have a REALLY great race at the next one!
Would be fun to hear some of Chris's music!
Very curious about your plans for 39/40. I will hit 39 in November and will have to whoop it up for my last year in the submaster age group :) What are you planning for this big 4-0 ? Details please...
Also, will you run fresh pond Sat knowing you *might* race on Sunday?
I am sure there is a plan in there..:)
I'm only 33 and I'm hearing my body almost begging me to do something else! The trail running could be a good option, I'd follow you there. ;) I don't think I'm interested in biking. There's that whole Kenpo thing I was telling you about. That could be awesome (combined with some running). It is too bad about the race. More of an inconvenience than anything. I was really ready to lay it all out. And even if we didn't come close to what we trained for, I think it would have been a huge PR. (Though I guess it could still happen...) Hope the message does the trick for your back!
i can half at the hampton's in a blizzard, i think it was 2008, it was horrible with all the wind and snow coming off the water during the last final miles. it took me 3 hours to get home, be glad they are being smart....and like you said, a break maybe just what you need at this point
@AJH - ha, yes, 12 inches of snow would do that to a race:)
@Tia - thanks:) But yes, 40 coming up. I am OK with it, I feel 20!
@Raina - I would have liked 3 weeks between the races, but oh well! The massage did help! I am much better:) I think being 39 in the open running is tough. Kinda excited for masters running. I'll let you know about plan when I have them, ha!
@katie, yes, I was MORE excited about your race. Come run Quincy!
Tami, I ran Hampton in crazy weather in the past, but I think it will be unsafe this year.
Where you planning on Hyannis? The 1/2?
I'm so eager to see what you do at these upcoming races. You are so scary fast now. :)
I think trail running sounds very very fun.
Would love to read your thoughts on what's next in terms of a challenge for you. You know I've been pondering on that myself - at 41 I know I will not always keep getting faster so goals NEED to be adjusted. Nonetheless - I also know lots of "more mature" runners who are in the form of their life so there is nothing to fear about the big 40, let me tell you!
As for your race being cancelled - not good! Keep us posted on the next event. Hope you get some relief for your back and your foot - and your body overall. ANd keep running scarily fast!
Did the race go on last weekend? We got SLAMMED with snow yesterday, but was much needed as Colorado has been so drought-ridden for years.
Great job on the high mileage week, awesome as always :). And very cool about your son and hubby boding vaca.
I'll be 50 in April; I can definitely see the allure of trail running - so much easier on the body recovering. Come to Colorado and we'll run a bunch of trails here in the mountains - and grab Raina along the way! :)
I hope the race wasn't cancelled, or if it was you enjoyed a leisure day instead. Glad the 'niggles' aren't bugging you too much and hope they clear up quickly!
