And so it begins

Chris and I spent last evening together on the couch watching "Breaking bad" in our pajamas, curled up under a blanket, eating pretzels, almonds and dark chocolate. It felt peaceful. At 11:45 we switched to regular TV to watch the ball drop. I had absolutely no envy for those sitting in the middle of all that excitement watching in Time Square. I was blissfully happy to be in my own home, to dream about the new possibilities the new year brings, and to feel such comfort and security in my home, in my life. I tip toed upstairs and woke Petru up at midnight, as promised, for a first 2013 kiss for him (second for me!). He did not believe me it was midnight and had to check his own watch before falling right back to sleep. And like that, a new year has just begun.

I don't make new year resolutions, but I do like to assess my own life and think ahead. As I clear out all the wrapping paper and boxes we collected over the past month, I realize that I want to own less, not more "stuff" in 2013. I also want more art on my walls, not expensive art, but meaningful art - some of my mom's work, some of my son's intricate railroad crossing/traffic lights black ink cities, and some art from my old home back in Romania. For every piece of clothing I get, I want to give one away. For every toy my son gets, I want him to choose to give one away. I want to foster more independence in my son, which means working through some of my own issues, so that I can let go. I want to be more patient with Chris, and break through some of the cultural issues that I have come to understand at a deeper level recently. I want to continue to enjoy my work and be challenged by it. I want to run, aim high, and be comfortable with whatever low that high might end up being. I want to work on embracing the changes that life brings, particularly when those changes include things that are unpleasant.

Happy New Year! What do you want in 2013?

THanks for sharing...the things you've listed that you want for 2013 are so meaningful (love the owning less, giving away one when you receive another). Great things to think about as we go into 2013!

Happy New Year!

Ha! I had to wake up the boys at midnight too, and this morning Matthew thought i never woke him up.

The things i want are very similar to yours, though the culture issues could be replaced with general communication issues :)

Happy new year, AM

I would like to see some of your son's art - that sounds particularly attractive to me. I like ink.
Happy New Year!

I love this AM! Maybe one of my favorite posts of yours. Your words flow so beautifully and speak such truth to me. Love how you woke Petru up to give him his first 2013 kiss. Love the simple but yet rich way you spent your New Year's Eve...my kind of night! and love that you are aiming high and willing to accept whatever lows that may be too. Oh, and less stuff...yes! more art! yay! Hey, I should just copy this and paste it in my own blog! ha ha. Just good good stuff here. 2013 sounds like it has already started off perfect for you...here's to hoping it is your best year yet! Glad I get to be a part of it. And I get to see you and your family in April. Yay!

I am constantly trying to get rid of stuff! Every Christmas and birthday we go through all the toys and create a huge donate pile, though, I'm not sure we're at a one-to-one ratio. I don't have Kaylee do this by herself because it's just too difficult for her to get rid of stuff, and she'd pick stuff that I want to keep for Emily.

For 2013 I want more patience...

Happy New Year AM! I miss you!

I'm planning a big move at the end of the year and downsizing my stuff is high on the list. In fact, I just realized that I brought four new items in to my home on New Years Day and I put five things in my donation bag. Xmas decorations are next up.

Good list. Oh and I'm the same on the art.

Nice list of things to improve on in 2013. I, too, have no desire to be out in Times Square on NYE. Give me my PJ's and couch any day!! I like to see so many blog buddies feeling like I do - less stuff, more meaning!

I think I meant to say living? Or more meaningful things? Anyway I'm sure you got the point :)

Love this - this is really inspiring. Wishing you all of this for 2013 AM - and as for cultural issues and understanding them - as a fellow immigrant I feel it is an ongoing process - but a really engaging and enriching one!
