The track

I was fortunate to have my first track workout of the season this afternoon, in 73 degrees and 20 MPH wind. Everyone at work was thrilled with the weather this morning, while I was mumbling under my breath about how this is going to mess up with my run.

OK, so I was really excited about going to the track. I love the track, or better, I love having done a track workout. Whatever! I was excited for some speed action.

Tim wrote a workout with a bunch of 200s, then 400s and then faster 200s, with plenty of recovery, and I thought this would be easy peasy.

I warmed up for 2.5 miles, building the pace, then took my shirt off, got my iPod set

"This is ten percent luck, twenty percent skill
Fifteen percent concentrated power of will
Five percent pleasure, fifty percent pain
And 100% reason to remember the name"

I hit the first intervals faster than I wanted (the goal is to NOT go as fast as I can on these, and learn pacing) and it was hard. #$@% . I did the second one and it was hard too. Welcome back to the track, AM. Reality check. You are not in track shape (of course, I have not gone to track since November, and the temps and 20 MPH wind did not help). I plugged along and completed the workout happy for the long recoveries that Tim set for me. Objectively, I hit some pretty awesome paces today, similar to what I was doing in November, just fewer intervals and more recovery. And I do feel great to have done the workout. And, like childbirth, I already forgot about the "hurt" and am so excited about building up my speed during the next six weeks before my first 5K. Bring it! I am ready for MORE!

73 degrees?! Sounds lovely when not running. Good for you for getting out there...your energy here is contagious. And I have that song as my first one on my 5k and 10k playlist for the few times I've used it. Gets me going. I am actually excited to do some track workouts this summer but it has taken me some time to get to the excited point since I spent so many years HAVING to run on a track and it usually coming with lots of negative feelings. Now it sounds kind of fun. And the weather will be warm enough to sit the kids in the grass with something (and threaten them or bribe them to behave) so I can do my workout. :) Nicole was saying the other day about how it was hard to keep her 200's at the pace her coach set...she wanted to go faster too. Again, good job getting this done. Excited for your 5k girl! And to meet you soon. xo

Gorgeous weather here too. Only 50's and no 20 MPH winds!! I drove by the track after work and saw all the HS kids since track and field practice started this week. I love spring.

That was a GREAT workout! I'm so excited to see you excited as you SHOULD be. You've been waiting patiently and now you get to go go go!!

I sure wish we had a tack near home! I am seriously considering helping the school get funding for one. It's a half an hour to a rubber track otherwise...and that's hard to do with my schedule. I still have considered driving it though!

I bet you had a BLAST! That 5k is going to be pretty rockin' :)

Yay! Back to the track! I didn't run hard yesterday (just easy), but at the end I was sweating (imagine that) and all I could think was that a marathon in even warmer temps will be tricky. I'm still debating that 5k in April...I bet I'll go just b/c you are, but I have this funny feeling the course must be long.

Great job!! I love track too and I prefer 200 and 400's over any other interval distance! Weather sounds lovely!!( if you aren't trying to sprint in it:))

Nice work and isn't it HARD to keep your pace when you want it? Great when you really develop that skill though - it's all worth it. Keep at it and just listen to your coach.

Obligatory comment about hating hearing you complain about such great weather. Ok, done.

That is one of my all time favorite speed work songs. How could you NOT go too fast listening to that?!

It always takes me several sessions to remember and refine my speedowork paces after time off. That's one of the things I love so much about those quicker intervals though: You get a lot of opportunities to get it right! I love the fine tuning.

Love how the track seems to kindly remind you if it hasn't seen you lately! Nice work and great workout song-I'm gonna steal it for my iPod later:)
