Focusing on the positive

I've just tallied my miles for July: 282! Wow! A record for me.

So I have noticed a pattern with my runs: good speed, OK easy, good hills/progression, awesome progression/sub MP, rough long, rough easy and back again! Hm, maybe I should stick to short distances...

Maybe not.

I think I just need to be more patient and less greedy when it comes to my run. Patient in the long runs - understanding that I have not run long in about one year, that I need to start slow (darn ego!), that I am still at the beginning of my training cycle. Less greed during speed/tempo/hills - understanding, for ex., that I don't need to run 10+ secs under MP just because I can and because it feels good. So I'll keep trying.

Next week I will do my first 20 miler! I will be running it with Katie on the marathon course. We will be running 8:20s and I might pick it up to MP for the last 30 minutes if I feel good (or maybe Katie will!). My goal is to get a solid long run in, the first 20+ out of 6! I am also super excited to run with Katie. I like Katie. I admire Katie. She is so nice and tough and strong and she never complains. I like that.

My legs feel good right now. I though I completely trashed them after Saturday's long run, but they recovered! I am grateful that my body can handle as much hard work; I know it is still adjusting to the higher mileage, which will toughen me up for the marathon. I am so happy to be able to take off and run for 90min to 3hours almost every day. I am enjoying the process and I know that if I focus on it rather than only on a specific time goal, I will be OK.

Happy training, that's what's all about:)

Wow, that's 9miles/day average! And you are just starting your training cycle and you need to be patient...yeah, right...

I have the same problem with my ego. It is my worst enemy and it will very likely lead to my destruction.

Nice July! Good luck with your 20 miler. I also like running with friends that don't complain...I don't complain until later :)

Enjoy!

What a positive outlook AM! Love how you get greedy with your runs...for some this isn't a problem...ha! I get greedy with food ...some with sex...maybe sale shopping but greedy for speedy runs? Love this about you! And love that you are able to reflect on yourself as an athlete and bottle up some of that "go get 'em" mentality so that you can unleash it when it is time. :) I need to catch up on here apparently because..who is Katie??

I run solo lately, partially to avoid complaining. I can't take it. I have 18 this week. Hope we both have excellent days.

Getting greedy is always what gets me in trouble! My coach forced me to not do that earlier this year and it definitely makes a difference. I don't really have shitty runs anymore! Sticking to prescribed pace/effort has been the key there. :)

Agreed - patience is the key - and it requires a ton of discipline, but it is all worth it in the end! Happy training! :)

What a wonderful post. I always love when you write because it seems to put things into perspective for me... and changes my negative attitude. You training is amazing to me - good luck with your 20 miler!

"early in my training plan" and "20miler" are polar opposites.... ;) 282 miles! Solid month!

I hate to be stupid but do you mean 282 running miles? Wow! What do you get up to when it is high?

Jenn said... Best Blogger Tips[Reply to comment]Best Blogger Templates

282!!! Awesome!! That is A LOT of miles especially considering so many of them are much harder than easy pace! From an outsider's perspective, you are absolutely nailing your training cycle thus far.

Yes, patience. I have none of it....or very little anyways. Not greedy with pace though because dammit my legs won't go faster than pace-ha!! Laughing at Amanda. Greedy with food here for sure-can one be greedy with sex? I'm entitled to be greedy, I'm often deprived....

Yes, you could strictly concentrate on short distance or what you view as your current strengths but I love that you don't. Instead you develop MORE strengths by working on things that challenge you. Swimming, HIM training, marathon....A strong bodied, strong minded, determined person who excels in EVERYTHING she sets her mind to. You will crush this marathon-I would bet my child on it:) OK-that's extreme. I would bet my husband rather-ha!

Good luck with your first 20! I don't know Katie well but she surely sounds admirable! Get those batteries in your shock collar! Done with my email length comment now:)

Big miles, girl!

What a perfect long run situation. I haven't ever ran a long run with anyone before. It would definitely change things a bit! I bet it's fun to have someone you run well with. :)

Glad your legs are feeling better after the long run and just how GREAT they'll feel even later in your cycle with the practice.
You are such a determined and smart worker, AM!

Wow, nice all-time high mileage girl, that's incredible!!

Yeah, I'm learning - the hard way - that my running is nowhere even in the same zip code as it once was....but I've come to realize that sometimes the things we once had are that much more appreciated when we lose it and have to claw that much more to get it back. I have no doubt you will be there racing the marathon of your life!! Can't wait!!!!

282 miles! You're an animal! I'm super excited for our 20 miler too. The weather doesn't look like it's going to be too ridiculously hot, so that's a bonus. I don't think I'll be running your MP for the last 30 minutes though. Your MP is my HMP right now! ;)

I must say that I'm very jelous of your ability to log that many miles. I don't have the mechanics for it. It's nice that you acknoledge and apreciate your body. Nice work AM. Big week!

I can't respond to you directly through e-mail now!! What?! I have a pretty healthy sex drive too. And sex every day wouldn't be bad but I'm exhausted most of the time. So glad that you are "sex healthy"! :)
