For a long time I thought that running is way harder than biking. I know it is like comparing apples to oranges, but I tend to automatically rank and compare things in my mind.
A little way back I started training with heart rate. I have been working mainly in zone 2, but today I had some zone 3 and 4 intervals. Holy Batman! First, it took me about 5 minutes to get in zone 3, and once there, sweat started pouring off of me (despite the fact that I had turned the heat down and there were 54 degrees in the room). I had a couple of repeats in zone 4, which meant that I had to work the big gears at an over 90 RPM to get there. I can't imagine ever going into zone 5. Time moved so slowly and I could not concentrate on watching TV because my pace and HR would slow down.
I also have never experienced a trainer induced endorphin kick, but after 2 hours this morning, I felt invincible! I think this HR stuff is very good for me. It makes me work the bike, something that I don't think I really did before! And, amazingly, my 3x10 (1.5 miles) @ 10K pace this evening hurt, but did not kill me. And I managed to stay away from the treadmill. Thank you, Arlington, for plowing the bike path!

It helps a lot to put a fan on high pointed at you while doing bike trainer work outs. Fans simulate outdoor riding in that it aids body cooling more than just temperature.
I use two!
So glad you got a good "high" this morning! I am just beginning to discover the bike workouts. So much I need to learn. Spin tonight..you've inspired me to work the bike a bit. :)
It is harder to get your HR up when inside on a trainer vs outside on the road. Go do some hill repeats outside... you'll get your HR up. ;)
so interested in all this heart rate training !!
I always know when a runner says that running is harder than biking that they haven't yet learned what it means to work hard on the bike...
It's so true, huh?
Working hard on the bike is...
freaking hard!
I have the same problem with biking. I need to figure out a way to continuously push myself.
I agree that intervals on the trainer are TOUGH! I have no problem getting into my zones outside, but inside I struggle.
I sweat SO MUCH when I am on the bike. It's ridiculous.
I have always known that biking was harder than running, since I a little kid. There is a huge hill by my house and my legs huuuuurt when biking up. Therefore I am a runner, not a cyclist.
When you look at me after bike interval session and swiiming, there is no difference. I am soaked after both, it is ridiculous how much I sweat when biking hard.
hi new follower (I found your blog through amanda's). way to go on the bike! I'm excited to read more of your blog :)
When I am training hard on the bike the TV is a non issue---music all the way! Glad you are finding your bike legs!
We all perceive bike riding as easy since we did it as a leisure activity as kids..... and then when you start to work on the bike, it is like WOW this is awful!
I soo need to get on my trainer! I've got marathon in May then a half IM in August. I'm getting over the treadmill boredom now I need to work on the trainer..
Gosh, this bike stuff is SO good for you! I can just imagine your strength and fitness going through the roof after a season of these types of workouts. How do you find your bike workouts? Where did you get your trainer? When the weather changes, will you still use the trainer for a harder workout?
Sorry, just curious!
