I've been travelling non stop since Monday afternoon. We arrived in Bucharest on Tuesday morning after flying for 13 hours. Petru slept for 2 hours which meant I did not sleep at all (I typically sleep the entire way!). On Wednesday we went to Bran, which is a small town in the Carpathian mountains, where I used to spend my summers as a child. Except that now we actually have a house with heat and hot water and cable TV as opposed to just a room where everyone slept together. Times have changed! The town has changed. The point of interest used to be Dracula's castle, the only bread store, the book store and the open market. Now there is a 3D movie theatre and pizza stores and you can get any type of american snack you want.
On Thursday Chris and I took a train to Cluj for my conference. The train ride was 6 hours, but I was able to use my computer and do work which was great.
I managed to do a few runs which helped a ton: an 8 miler on Monday before we left, a 10 miler on Wednesday, a 5 miler with Chris on Thursday, and a 4 mile interval run this morning. I am completely recovered after the HIM. My back, arms and neck were sore for a couple of days - I think I was tense on the bike - but my legs responded very well to being stuffed into my recovery tights for 2 days straight. No soreness by Tuesday am.
Tomorrow will go back to Bran, where mom and Petru are having a ball together. I am so proud of Petru, he is so flexible and has had no issues adjusting and trying to speak the language.
That's it, off to give a talk!

I know Carpathian Mountains from the other end - Poland. Things have changed there enormously too. Often I do not recognize the country I left. Sometimes I miss the simplicity of the life there when I was a kid but then again I was a kid and everything looked better then. :)
Still, I would rather see Dracula's castle than a 3D movie theater.
Sorry for my belated CONGRATS on your 1/2 IM - I am so glad you did so well, had fun and enjoyed the transition from running to Triathlons! YAY - enjoy your vacation now!
So cool. Enjoy your trip and let's see some pictures when you get back.
ah, I wondered where you might be since you commented on my blog at what would have been 2 AM on the east coast. Enjoy the trip.
Be careful, sometimes recovery takes longer than we think, the fatigue can come after we feel all better. I'm pretty sure you know how you're feeling since you've done marathons, but I know people who thought they were recovered and when they started to feel tired a couple weeks after a big race pushed through and ended up not doing themselves any good.
Seems you are enjoying yourself. I am glad that you recovered so fast. You are going to rock the marathon.
(I would love to go to see Dracula's castle...)
By the way, it is awesome that you have taught Petru speak Romanian. I know a lot of people who have moved to the US and has not teach children their mother tongue because they do not think it is necessary since they do not plan on going living back to their home country. But then it only causes problems because children then cannot even talk to their grandparents who usually do not speak English.
Enjoy your visit home! Can't wait to see pictures...
I'm glad you are getting in some running. Do others run there much--or do people look at you funny when you run?
I might have to stop reading your blog because I hate how fast you recover from everything. It makes me irratated with myself! Not cool. Have fun!!!
cool to be on your trip! and i still need to read your race report. I'm just waiting for more than ~5 min so I can really read it and not have my kids in my face, etc, etc;-)
Thank you.
I never use Garmin for intervals because I do not believe it to be accurate especially when one changes pace and I prefer doing math in my head while looping around the track because it distracts me from suffering:) This was the first time I used it (well, it was the first time I did "real" intervals not on a track). I do not use Garmin that often, only once in a while when I need to check what my pace is for easy runs,to see whether I am doing them too fast or too slow. But I will use it for tempo runs when I start doing them.
I just found your blog today and I'm a new follower!
