1. I love love love triathlons.
2. I get dizzy after I swim hard (or swim while anxious). The dizziness does go away.
3. I must warm up before swims. I knew this, and was pissed they did not let us get into the water before the swim. I ran a mile or so, but obviously that was not enough.
4. I need more race swim practice. I've been doing a lot of open water swims and even crossed Walden alone, but a race situation is different. During the race swim last weekend I almost panicked, lights in my brain went on red, alarms got turned on! It was like "all this splashing, all these people so close to me in the water, all the murkiness, not safe". I need to habituate my brain to race swims, so that the lights can dim down, alarms can turn off; I want my brain to be able to say "yes, people all over, splashing, but no big deal, we've been here before, it's OK. Self talk alone can't do that unless it is paired with exposure.
5. And so, I signed up for an olympic tri in August. The swim is in a river. Can you spell flooding?
6. I can bike! Yes, my bike split was not fast, but that's mostly bc of the speed bumps and the cornering we had to do.
7. I've got legs! I managed to run a 5K PR (not really since my Garmin PR is 19:37, but a 5K PR based on official results).
8. Biking is making me a faster runner. I've noticed this when I trained for Baystate last year, and I notice it now, too.
9. I am impressed with how well my body is handling training. I spend more time training than ever, yet I am not run down, sick, sore, or injured! I really believe that my power naps and diet are helping a lot. Speaking of diet, I have been craving steak - weird!

Love to hear someone feeling good about racing/training. That confidence is priceless! You'll rock your next one too.
Eat Steak:)
This is wonderful and inspiring to read - the more I read this the more I think this is the way forward for me too - I am certainly going to add more biking to my training as I really enjoy it as well. And for the swimming - I'm going to have to bite the bullet there somehow..
Oh and the steak craving? Perhaps you are getting some anemia? I have it and noticed I was craving red meat. Had my blood tested and bingo - now take 2 iron pills a day and I'm much better. You'll be EVEN more on fire then!
Awesome! You've been bitten by the bug. Watch out. It's addictive. ;)
nice! and love your new blog title and pics!;-)
and yes, i've def found I'm faster off the bike. funny how it works. Guess the muscles are all warmed up by then!
you are doing so awesome :) glad to hear the biking is paying off on running ;)
a friend of ours said start kicking a lot towards the end of your swim, it will get some blood into your legs and help coming out of the water with lightheadedness and just help your legs not to feel so weird.
chris also gets a friend to practice open water swimming with... they start off racing each other, sometimes will bump and pull each other and stuff like that just to get used to it. but with him the more he races the better he does at the swim.
Flooding; a double entendre?
I wish biking would make me run faster. I wish biking would make me bike faster.
I'm glad you are having such a positive experience..eat some steak woman!
Great Job on that tri! You are doing AWESOME! Looks like I will be doing a lot of biking and swimming before I'm able to run again. Hopefully, I will have the same results and it will make me a faster runner as well! Also, love the pics! You're in GREAT shape!
I hear ya about biking and running. I think it warms us up and sets the tone for our cadence.
I don't eat a lot of meat. Not because I'm a vegetarian, just restrict it. Whenever I crave a steak, I always feel it's because I'm lacking iron in my diet. Don't really know if I'm right, but I guess that's how I justify it!
Love new "header"!
I have also realized that biking helps me with running. Or if it does not make me faster, it definitely helps me to stay in good running shape.
That's so cool all the things you have learned by doing your first tri. And the fact you loved it so much that you signed up for another??? That screams enthusiasm - yay for you!!! btw, I think the bike slows me down cuz I have a big, clunky mountain bike ...fun for the trails in the mountains but wowzie, I'm slow on the road. Congrats again, girl!!! :)
What an athlete. I can only dream about doing a tri since the water is my biggest fear. It sounds like you excel at everything. Tips appreciate! :)
you said it first, time to change the names of our blogs!!! i love it too. you need to find a group to swim in and tell them you want to practice swimming a group, it helped me not freak out. ask them to push you under, swim over you , grab your feet, etc. it will help.
Loved hearing your swim self-talk, as I just wrote about the same (only I was far worse off than you).
A 6:30 pace on the run. Darn girl! You do have a pair of legs.
Great job.
I am loving the blog makeover! Look at your amazing leg muscles in that biking picture!! I just know that you are going to do so awesome at this Tri thing! You just wait....with a few more races under your belt you are going to be one of the big dogs! You will be the girl to beat:) It is so great to see how excited and enthusiastic you are about your new passion!
